Scripture: “Elisha prayed, ‘O LORD, open his eyes, that he
may see.’ ” (2 Kings 6:17)
Reflection: The setting was when the king of Syria sent an army to capture the prophet Elisha. Elisha’s servant had seen this great host and became alarmed. Elisha told him not to be afraid - greater were those who were with them than those who were with the enemy (2 Kings 6:16). Presently Elisha prayed that his servant’s eyes would be opened. Suddenly they were! He was able to see horses and chariots of fire surrounding and protecting them.
Elisha’s faith was remarkable! We are not told that he actually saw that great spiritual army, but he believed it was there. His conviction was so strong that he shared it with his servant. He believed in something he could not see, and desired his friend to see in order to believe. How does that kind of faith mount up within a person? How does faith that strong come into being?
Romans 10:17 tells us, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Elisha was a man who heard from God. He was faithful and obedient. God honored him and revealed secret things to him. We, also, must hear from God. Only then will we have the faith to believe and the courage to proceed. He longs for us to be still, to know His love, and to know His will. Let faith arise! Lord, open our eyes... to You.
